Sam holds an M.Phys degree in Physics from the University of Manchester, graduating with First Class Honours.

He has always been interested in scientific research – in the idea that we should always push the boundaries of what is known and what can be done technologically.

After graduating, Sam worked on the theory of ‘strange metals’ – unusual quantum phases of matter that can exist at very low temperatures – at the University of St Andrews and the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Some of Sam’s work was published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

During Sam’s time at St Andrews, he had the opportunity to teach Physics & Maths tutorials to small groups of undergraduate students. Sam believes that the best way to learn about any subject is by actively solving problems, and Sam’s role as a tutor was to help nurture and improve the problem-solving skills of the students.

In Sam’s free time, he likes to participate in sports, particularly football and athletics. He has a keen interest in music, good coffee, and reading about history.
